Old cars need metal number plates

There is a date which dictates whether an old car can use the silver on black number plates or it has to use the newer plastic type. That date is January 1973 but it seems a shame that classic cars built and registered after this date have to use the plastic plates as they just look incorrect. Perhaps the rule could be changed to include all the cars made until that model was taken out of production. For example the Mk1 Escort ended in 1975 but they cannot have metal plates after 1973, the cut off could be the end of production.
