The Origins Of The Belly Dance

Belly dancing is the western term coined for the Arab folk dance. The origins of the dance are actually a mystery, however, it is claimed to have its beginnings in Ancient Babylon. The dance was for women who danced socially while men played the drums. Upon the arrival of Islam, belly dancing was outlawed. The dance was kept alive by poor women and slaves who were trained in the art to perform for rich men in their belly dance costumes. It is also interesting to note that belly dancing my have been an art performed to help deter the pain associated with childbirth since it strengthens stomach muscles.
